Tiger Woods Misses Cut For Only 10th Time In Career, But Feels Optimistic

Tiger Woods Misses Cut For Only 10th Time In Career, But Feels Optimistic

Tiger Woods missed a 36-hole cut for only the 10th time in his nearly two-decade career, but you would never know it by the sound of his comments afterward.

Woods shot four straight bogeys on the back nine in Friday’s second round of the Quicken Loans National, and over two rounds missed 16 greens. Tiger’s 7-over 149 put him 13 shots off the lead and below the cut line for the first time since the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship last year.

But afterward Tiger Woods said he was actually happy with his play in the tournament, the first time in more than three months after having back surgery earlier this year.

“I hate to say it, but I’m really encouraged by what happened this week,” Woods said. “I missed the cut by four shots — that’s a lot. But the fact that what I was able to do physically, and the speed I had and the distance that I was hitting the golf ball again, I had not done that in a very long time. Felt great today.”

In the end, Tiger said he was happy to see how well his body responded. He noted that missing the cut was just the result of “a ton of simple, little mistakes” and believed he could easily correct the errors as he continued to recover.

Before the tournament kicked off on Thursday, Woods boasted that he was pain free for the first time in forever and that he didn’t have any risk to re-injuring his back.

“Obviously, I’m going to get stronger as time goes on,” he said. “Just like it is with every round we play, we can hit behind a tree root and damage something, awkward lies, the little knickknack things that have happened to us that have played at this level. I’m no different in that regard.”

Tiger said he normally would have skipped the tournament to continue resting his back, but some unique circumstances brought him to the course. The Quicken Loans National is actually partnered with his own non-profit organization, the Tiger Woods Foundation.

“If this wasn’t the foundation and our impact that we can have with kids, I probably would not have played,” Woods said, adding, “Our goal was the British Open.”

Tiger’s competitors have the date circled on their calendars.

“He just got a couple rounds under his belt. So he’s going to be a severe threat at the British — probably a favorite — and after playing these couple rounds, I think he’ll take something from it,” said Jordan Spieth.

Tiger Woods is still on schedule to compete in the Open Championship next month.
