We all know that in 2013, we are spending an enormous amount of time online, and the majority of time spent online is devoted to using social media; that is, procrastinating online.
But businesses are also jumping onto the social media bandwagon, and understanding these social media statistics can really help you understand how to market your business properly.
1. Facebook is the clear winner
In terms of users, anyway. One of the major reasons that Facebook stands out is because its total user count is more than a BILLION, as opposed to the millions the other social media outlets can boast of.
Of these 1.15 billion users, 751 million use Facebook on their mobile devices. For comparison, 751 million mobile Facebookers easily outstrip Twitter’s 500 million users.
2. But Twitter has its own strengths
Just consider the fact that 47 million of those users belong to Justin Bieber alone! (Just kidding, I’m sure those 47 million users follow other people too.) Anyway, Twitter is becoming increasingly popular with the 55- to 64-year-old demographic.
Why? We’re not sure, but Twitter seems to be the simplest and most-user friendly of the social media platforms, so maybe it’s a way for them to test the waters of the entire web.
3. Instagram
This photo- (and now video-)sharing platform is great for celebrities and brands, but it can also be great for your average small business as well. You can post photos of your products, shoot quick videos of your services and special events, and let everyone know you’re not completely out of touch with contemporary tech reality.
4. Pinterest… for foodies
Evidently, the majority of what people talk about on Pinterest is food. If you have recipes to share or you’re trying to get a cooking blog or show going, or give your storefront some extra exposure, you should definitely head over to Pinterest.
More than 80% of all of the content on Pinterest consists of repins, not original content. So many people essentially just click repin, but actually add new content much less often. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see. And if you’re in need of a laugh, check out “Pinterest Fails“.
5. YouTube
The epic video-sharing website that started out with people uploading funny and unimportant videos about themselves is now the go-to site for music videos, commercials, and a host of other interesting content. Businesses started using the video platform to build their brand, and it has grown from there.
YouTube even hosted an awards show a few weeks ago: the YouTube Music Video Awards. Even without the awards shows, YouTube has 1 billion different people visiting every month.
