What Obama Is Doing About The 20,000 Elephants That Were Killed Last Year In Africa

Obama and his administration has signed executive orders and created a strict code to prohibit illegal ivory from elephant tusks from entering the U.S..

The Obama administration is concerned about America’s participation in the ivory trade, because last year, over 20,000 African elephants were killed for their tusks. This past month, the world mourned for one of the most famous elephants in Africa after he was killed by poachers for his ivory. Satao had evaded poachers before. He was filmed by a wildlife filmmaker just prior to his death. Mark Deeble, the filmmaker, wrote of the elephant on his wildlife blog. He explained the event that made him realize that the intelligent creature was aware that his own tusks were something that could get him killed:

“He didn’t walk straight to the water. It took him almost an hour to cover the final kilometer as he slowly zig-zagged from one bush to another. The glint I’d seen, came whenever he turned his head and appeared to bury it in a bush. Each time he did, he’d wait a few minutes, partially hidden, then continued zig-zagging upwind, scenting the air, to check there wasn’t a poacher hidden at the waterhole. I was incredibly impressed, and incredibly sad — impressed that he should have the understanding that his tusks could put him in danger, but so sad at what that meant.”

The elephant, emotionally scarred from having narrowly escaped poachers before, was killed just a few months after Deeble wrote of his trauma-induced behavior. He lived fearing he was being hunted for his tusks… he was, of course, correct.

Poachers crouched in the waterholes aren’t always native to the elephants’ land like many American’s believe. CNN‘s Wayne Pacelle wrote, “Very wealthy hunters, mainly from the United States, are picking off elephants in their zeal to bag the biggest tusks and trophies and rise within the ranks of the global trophy hunting fraternity.” The Obama administration has decided to put a very tight restriction on the Ivory trade into the U.S. borders. The effect, Pacelle explained, should help save at least some elephant lives. America has been the second largest market for ivory products. Early this year though, the Obama administration fought against enormous pressure from the small group of very wealthy elephant hunters.

The organized hunting by rich, American hunting enthusiasts is perfectly legal and backed by Safari Club International. This lobbying group justifies the hunts by saying that they actually help elephants in the long run by stimulating local economy and helping to fund conservation efforts.

Pacelle, though, claims that the American trophy hunters are no different than the elephant poachers. He quotes the Safari Club and writes:

“‘An elephant with really good ivory (100 pounds, or 45 kg, per tusk used to be the magic number, though these days 70 pounds, or 32 kg, is considered very good) is generally considered Africa’s top hunting trophy. Trophy quality is determined by the weight and beauty of the tusks.’ I ask myself: Would poachers put it any differently?”

PBS stated that recent elephant killings have been the most devastating that conservationists have seen in decades. The Obama administration is being praised for the newest National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking, because it included a ban on the commercial trade of elephant ivory which include a total ban of commercial importing and exporting of elephants’ ivory and the significant restriction of the resale of elephant ivory within the United States in general. The Obama administration’s ban states that the only time a sale can cross state lines is if the ivory is verified to be over 100 years old. It also states that ivory sales within a state are not allowed unless the seller can provide proof that the item was “lawfully imported prior to 1990 for African Elephants and 1975 for Asian elephants, or under an exemption document.” The Obama administration’s declaration also restored African elephants as an endangered species, which revoked a special rule made by the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Some believe Obama’s efforts are not enough. The elephant ivory ban imposed by the Obama administration allows for a limited number of imported “trophies” of African elephant ivory: Individuals can now only import two per year. Many feel the Obama administration should be allowing absolutely zero tusks to be brought home to the United States from safaris.

Others say Obama and his administration went overboard. Ann McFeatters, of McClatchy-Tribune, feels the ban is too harsh. She says that the law will only harm law-abiding elephant hunters and law-abiding citizens who wish to appreciate ivory items such as art or musical instruments that have already been made. She points out that according to safari hunter Scott O’Grady, without legal American safari hunters funneling their money into elephant hunts, funds for anti-poaching rangers would dry up. She also points out that importing ivory was already illegal, enforcement has merely weakened. She likened Obama’s ivory ban to the futile “war on drugs.”

Artist Nick Brandt, who creates captivating imagery telling the haunting tale of the elephants’ downfall, told the Sierra Club’s Sierra Magazine:

“Too often I saw NGOs come in and try to run programs from their offices in Washington or London or even Nairobi without having a sense of what it takes to make programs work effectively. The only real hope of conservation in East Africa is working with the local communities. Conservation supports the people, and then the people will support conservation.”

Brandt formed the Big Life Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that trains and supports anti-poaching agents in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park. He said that if we wait around for the world’s governments to effectively stop the elephant killings, there will be none left in under a decade. The organization relies heavily on donations which has helped rangers make over 1400 arrests in just the past few years.

Still, many Americans have no opinion on what Obama should or shouldn’t have done this winter to protect elephants after learning that over 20,000 were killed. These people are simply saddened the loss of lives like that of Satao, and don’t know what should be done to protect the intelligent species. These people mourn the loss of elephants that are fully aware that they are being hunted for their tusks, because no administration, including Obama’s, can ever bring them back.

iPhone 6 Rumors: Leaked Photos Show Larger, Curved Glass Screen With 4.7 Inch Display

iPhone 6 Leak

A leak of new iPhone 6 photos appear to confirm that the new model will, as earlier rumored, feature a larger screen than any previous iPhone model — and also a glass display screen that curves toward the bottom, as Apple attempts to stay ahead of such chief competitors as the Samsung Galaxy phone.

The new images were obtained and released by the site 9to5Mac.com, which specializes in getting its hand on these sorts of internal Apple images and documents. the 9to5Mac site includes a large cache of leaked images.

This image from the latest leak, which just hit the internet on Monday morning, shows a size comparison between the new 4.7 inch iPhone 6 and the most recent iPhone 5 model, which came with a four-inch screen. The size difference is clearly visible.

iPhone 6 Leak Rumors

Apple are also rumored to be developing a new “phablet” model of the iPhone — bigger than a phone, smaller than a tablet — with a 5.5 inch screen. But no images of the even bigger iPhone 6 have been released via leak or otherwise.

As with all Apple leaks, there’s no real way to confirm the authenticity of the photos, or if they will, in fact, reflect the final design of the iPhone 6. But 9to5Mac boasted of receiving “several photos of purported display glass covers in both black and white variations.”

iPhone 6 leak

The tech site BGR.com, which also ran the leaked photos, noted, “in the pictures… the display glass on the iPhone 6 is curved at the bottom, as you can see by the way light is reflected on the lower edges of the display.”

What do you think? Can you make out the curvature at the lower edges of the screen?

iPhone 6 Curve Leak

When Bloomberg News first reported that Apple was working on a curved screen for the iPhone 6, back in November of last year, the news agency did not say that the iPhone 6 would include a flexible display. The iPhone 6 is still an iPhone, albeit with — reportedly — a curved glass screen.

According to the 9to5Mac leak, the new iPhone 6, in addition to the greater amount of screen real estate and the possible screen curvature, will be thinner and sleeker than any iPhone to date, with improved cameras and a faster processor.

Otherwise, the iPhone 6 does not contain any news-making new functions, and is mainly an improved, sleeker version of the same iPhone that has sold more than 500 million units since its introduction in 2007, making the iPhone one of the most popular consumer products of all time.

Digital Readers Might Lack Comprehension Benefits

With society moving more and more into the digital era, the classroom is evolving, too.  Project Tomorrow recently released a study showing that almost one in three students now uses a digital device provided by the school.

E-readers are definitely becoming more popular.  According to Julian Baggini of The Financial Times, as recently as 2010, hardly anyone owned an e-reader.  Now, almost one-half of Americans do.  Many college students prefer the method, citing its affordability, ease carrying, and ability to personalize.

But is this digital reading promoting comprehension and active learning?

Digital media senior Alberto Ceja’s research project suggests it is not.  He gave an article to 10 students in paper form, and 10 students in a digital format.  After reading the article, the students were all given the same quiz with questions pertaining to the article.  Students who read the paper version scored an average of 77%, while digital readers scored around 60%.

One study out of Westchester University of Pennsylvania suggests that comprehension is higher when using print reading.  While students were more likely to want to read with an e-reader, they were simply skimming for important information, rather than doing deep reading, writes Rama Yousef for The Daily Cougar.

Digital media professor Jerry Waite believes there is still much to be seen on this topic, and perhaps age has something to do it.  He suggests that e-readers are still new, and we will have to wait to see how they effect those who grow up with them and whose use of them comes second-nature.

“When children have more of a use of these things as they are young, they will come to find them much more conducive to learning,” Waite said.

While e-book versions of textbooks for Waite’s class are available, he never sees students using them.

“I have never seen one student using the iPad version; they all buy the book,” Waite said. “Part of that is because they weren’t raised with the iPad.”

Sara Margolin of the State University of New York has also suggested that many of the problems surrounding comprehension of digital materials may be from unfamiliarity with the format.

“Having a device that requires a lot of attention to simply operate could essentially steal working memory resources,” says Margolin.

In order to help students comprehend better through digital media, ed tech products are beginning to be created, allowing students to use print methods of comprehension (writing notes and highlighting important text) on a digital format.  Curriculet is one such website.

The program allows teachers to create lessons based around e-books, adding information in video or text form where they see the need to promote better understanding of the material.  Students are even capable of adding their own notations as they read.

The program has raised concerns that these features will interrupt a students’ ability to read and comprehend.

“Reading flow should only be interrupted if the interruption is meaningful and relevant,” Curriculet CEO Jason  Singer said.

It is clear that more research is needed, over the coming decades, to tell us which format is truly better.  Until then, according to Tufts University cognitive scientist Maryanne Wolf, people need a “bi-lateral” brain.

“We should be simultaneously reading to children from books, giving them print, helping them to learn this slower mode and at the same time steadily increasing their immersion into the technological, digital age. It’s both,” Wolf said.

Chelsea Clinton Doesn’t Care About Money, Has $15 Million Fortune Already

Chelsea Clinton is worth $ 15 million even though she doesn't care about money

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton reportedly has a net worth of about $ 15 million even though she has insisted that she doesn’t care about money.

In a recent interview with Fast Company, Chelsea Clinton said in part “It is frustrating, because who wants to grow up and follow their parents? I’ve tried really hard to care about things that were very different from my parents. I was curious if I could care about [money] on some fundamental level, and I couldn’t. That wasn’t the metric of success that I wanted in my life …”

These comments came as her mom, presumed presidential candidate and income inequality foe Hillary Clinton, stirred things up during her unexpectedly contentious Hard Choices book tour by claiming that she and her husband were “dead broke” when they left the White House, and that they are not truly well off. Bill and Hillary Clinton are reportedly now worth somewhere in the range of $ 100 million to $ 200 million. Mrs. Clinton makes about $ 200,000 a pop for speeches primarily in front of corporate one-percenters, and her husband, the former president, makes even more for his group presentations. Along with hefty book advances, making big bucks on the speaking circuit evidently has turned out not to be one of those hard choices.

UNLV students are also up in arms about an upcoming speech at the school in which Mrs. Clinton, the former Secretary of State, stands to collect a $ 225,000 speaking fee.

The Clintons have reportedly set up a trust to minimize their IRS liability under the estate (a.k.a. death) tax, with the presumed beneficiary being Chelsea Clinton and her family.

As The Inquisitr previously reported, Chelsea Clinton reportedly earns about $ 1 million a year, which includes a hefty paycheck from what might amount to a no-show job with NBC News, thereby raising implications of corporate welfare.

After working at a Wall Street hedge fund, Chelsea Clinton apparently followed her dream and became an executive at the Clinton Foundation, the glitzy philanthropic organization coincidentally founded by her parents.

Commenting on Chelsea Clinton’s wealth, the New York Post opined that…

The website Celebrity Net Worth pegs Chelsea’s personal fortune at $ 15 million, with most of her dough earned as a consultant at McKinsey & Co. and by working for Avenue Capital Investment Group. The site estimates [husband Marc] Mezvinsky, 36, is also worth $ 15 million, which he made as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and while working at the hedge fund 3G Capital and at a hedge fund he co-founded in 2011.

There have been some hints that Chelsea Clinton must pursue a career in politics down the road. If she does seek elective office someday, critics would probably say that she appears to be yet another candidate from the elite strata of society who never had a real (or as they say in the U.K, “proper”) job.

About the lavish lifestyle of the Clinton family, the New York Post separately claimed that “The Dems are a coalition of ultra-rich cultural-elite donors on the one hand and government employees and their clients on the other… Yet even for Democrats, the Clintons got rich in an exotic way. They accumulated something like $ 100 million not by building a business or inventing something or even writing some hit songs. Their entire fortune came from political celebrity. (Their daughter has even accumulated $ 15 million by being the offspring of political celebrities. Or did you think NBC News paid her $ 600,000 a year because of her obvious broadcasting ability?)… Swanning around the world staying in five-star hotels, reading speeches drafted by someone else and signing your name to books written by someone else is not exactly quarry labor.”

About Chelsea Clinton claiming to be unconcerned about financial gain, National Review perhaps harshly observed that “Of course Chelsea Clinton does not have the sense or the good taste to be embarrassed when talking about her blasé attitude toward money: Money is invisible to her for the same reason that water is invisible to a fish — she’d notice it if it weren’t there, and flap like a desperate landed mackerel until she’d secured her next big payday.”

Is it easier to not care about money as a metric of success, as Chelsea Clinton puts it, when you are already rich with an estimated net worth of $ 15 million and famous, politically connected parents?

Jaywalking ASU Professor Ersula Ore Forcibly Arrested. Violent Dashcam Video Goes Viral!

Ersula Ore arrest video

A dashcam video showing the violent arrest of an Arizona State University professor for jaywalking has gone viral. And for good reason. In the video, the woman – now identified as Ersula Ore is seen being forcefully thrown to the ground by an Arizona State University Police Department officer who is attempting to arrest her. The incident happened in the month of May but is only gaining media attention now, after the video footage went viral.

According to NY Daily News, Ersula Ore was stopped and detained by the cop after she was caught walking down the middle of a street. Ersula claims she was forced to walk through the street due to an ongoing construction activity nearby. When asked to provide an ID before she is arrested, Ersula seems surprised and questions the police officer for his rudeness and resists arrest. The video also shows that the officer did not fully listen to what Ersula had to say. The matter quickly escalates and the police officer is seen using extreme force on Ersula. The footage shows Ersula being thrown to the ground and forcefully handcuffed.

In the verbal exchange between the two before it got physical, the officer, now identified as Stewart Ferrin is heard saying this;

“Let me see your ID or you will be arrested for failing to provide ID,”

To this, Ersula replies to him by saying that she has no issues abiding by the law but demands the officer to speak to her in a more respectful manner.

The man however doesn’t seem to be in the mood to listen to her and goes ahead in order to handcuff her. This is resisted by Ersula after which things went violent. The next moment, Ersula is seen pinned to the tarmac after which the officer and a colleague use brute force to arrest her. While getting up handcuffed, the video also shows Ore kicking the officer in the shin. According to Ersula’s lawyer, Alane M. Roby, the force of the slam caused Ersula’s dress to ride up and resulting in her “exposing her anatomy to all onlookers.”

“She was exposed and told the officer she was exposed. Her dress was up; the officer was reaching toward her anatomy. She felt uncomfortable with hands going there,” Roby has told 3TV

After her arrest, Ersula Ore was charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, refusing to provide identification when requested to do so by an officer and obstructing a highway or public thoroughfare, according to CNN.

Meanwhile the ASU has officially released a statement on their Facebook page that seems to be in favor of the officers.

It says;

“ASU authorities have reviewed the circumstances surrounding the arrest and have found no evidence of inappropriate actions by the ASUPD officers involved. Because the underlying criminal charges are pending, there is not much more we can say at this time.”

According to the ASU website, Professor Ersula Ore is an English professor whose research interests include cultural studies. The matter is now up for preliminary hearing on Thursday, July 3.

After watching the video, who do you think is at fault here? Ersula Ore or the police officer? Is this yet another case of police authorities making frivolous arrests?

Iraqi Forces Pull Back From Tikrit After Failed Offensive

Iraq Forces Pull Back

Iraqi forces have retreated to a neighboring town as a push to retake the northern city of Tikrit from Sunni militants has failed, according to BBC News.

Saturday’s offensive was the latest move against the rebels, part of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), as the government attempts to drive them out of Tikrit, a Sunni stronghold that was the hometown of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

The government’s forces did not fare much better on Sunday, as “at least two army helicopters were damaged by insurgents as they transported troops to the” University of Tikrit campus in the northern part of the city, according to residents who spoke to the Los Angeles Times.

Times reporter Shashank Bengali also cited U.S. concerns about the offensive:

American officials are urging Iraqi security forces not to rush into attempting to retake cities, which would risk bogging the army down in dangerous urban warfare against well-armed insurgents just as U.S. forces were a decade ago. Without such a push, however, analysts believe the insurgents are consolidating their hold on territory they control and plotting ways to strike Baghdad.

CNN also quoted a woman in Tikrit as saying that “there are no Iraqi troops here,” casting further doubt on the government’s claims and prospects of retaking the city.

And in a separate development, ISIS announced that it was now “The Islamic State,” or IS, dropping any geographic specificity from its name and declaring the establishment of a caliphate.

Earlier reports indicated heavy fighting around the University of Tikrit campus in the Qadissiyah district, a northern part of the city, as well as other areas to the south. The BBC also reported “clashes around an air base formerly used by the US military, Camp Speicher.”

As night fell, however, it became increasingly clear that the latest effort was running into strong insurgent resistance. But conflicting reports from the country made it difficult to assess the reality of the situation.

Civilians in the city told the Washington Post that the militants “had repelled the troops’ advance, rigging roads into the city with explosives,” while state media told a different tale: the rebels were being effectively cleared from Tikrit.

There is, as the Post, notes, significant incentive for the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to succeed in Tikrit, or at least appear to succeed. Maliki has been blamed for the sectarian divisions that gave rise to ISIS and could find himself out of power by the end of the week, as leaders gather to choose a new prime minister in the wake of spring elections.

The rebels have a notable disadvantage in terms of numbers, but that discontent among the Sunni population has helped perpetuate its strengths. In a related story, The Daily Beast pointed to “myth-making” ability as a crucial part of its recent success, saying that “every surrender [of government troops] mov[ed] the myth of ISIS’s strength closer to reality.”

That in turn has enhanced the militants’ numbers and ability to fight Baghdad:

Testimony of police and local sources who witnessed the fall of Tikrit, reveals ISIS was far weaker than previously believed when they swept through the region as Iraqi Security Forces were on the verge of collapse before the offensive began. However, with the momentum of these past two weeks, the augmentation of ISIS by local fighters and prisoners released from anti-terrorism prisons, and the spoils gained from the remains of 7 collapsed Iraqi Army divisions what was once a far less substantial ISIS force is now a formidable conventional army. The ISIS force Baghdad now faces is far stronger than the one it failed to confront only weeks ago.

Separately, Iraq acknowledged Saturday that it had received aging Sukhoi-25 fighter jets from Russia. The Maliki government has been pressing for aid from the United States but has been frustrated by the Obama administration’s reluctance to wade back into what could become another Iraqi quagmire.

But the crisis there is largely one of a political nature and it’s widely believed that absent a compromise appeasing the disaffected groups – namely, Sunnis and Kurds – the violence will continue, along with the threat posed by the Islamic State.

That is why, according to Reuters, Iraqi politicians have been “racing against time” ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to fill government posts, motivated by fears that an insurgent advance on Baghdad could be imminent.

But the news agency also reports that the militants took down a government helicopter on Sunday.

Should the offensive in Tikrit fail, as seems increasingly possible despite government rhetoric, it would only heighten Baghdad’s fears – and almost certainly mean a new prime minister for Iraq.
