A burglary suspect who took a 2-year-old boy hostage in Rapid city has been arrested following a six-hour standoff with police.
Raymond Cuny, 32, entered a Silver Street Home at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday to carry out a robbery of the property. When law enforcement arrived at the scene Cuny allegedly fled into a nearby home.
Several adults and children were able to flee from their house when he entered by a 2-year-old boy was left behind. Rapid City Police spokeswoman Tarah Huepel said the suspect did not know the child nor the people at the residence.
Apparently, authorities maintained on-and-off communication with the suspect as they pled with him not to harm the child. Several nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution due to the fact that initial reports suggested Cuny had a firearm in his possession.
Bhioneer.com reported that at around 10:30 p.m. a special response team forced entry to the home and rescued the child. They were able to do this using advance distraction devices and door-breach round to confuse the suspect and disorient him.
The suspect was arrested for second-degree kidnapping, second-degree burglary and had two outstanding warrants to his name.
Kevin Thom, the Pennington County Sheriff, said during a news conference about the 2-year-old hostage that the two warrants against the suspect were for previous felonys.
Police chief Jegeris said that at one point armored vehicles towed nearby vehicles away and pulled down fences in an attempt to rescue the child from the hostage situation:
“There were a lot of intense moments tonight. We are extremely thankful that the child is safe and has been returned to his mother. On behalf of the Rapid City Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and South Dakota Highway Patrol, I am extremely proud of the Special Response Team and their heroic efforts,” Jegeris said.
